<p>There is no yes or no answer to this question. I’m sorry, but it depends on the person and the circumstances.</p>
<p>For example, if you live in a small town in Wyoming and go to a small school in Wyoming, then yes you need a good gpa. If on the other hand you go to the University of Texas or BYU, and your grade point average is low, then I wouldn’t worry about it.</p>
<h2><strong>The Big 4 do have Minimum GPA Requirements</strong></h2>
<p>But they aren’t the same at all schools. At some schools like Texas and BYU they are only 3.2. At other schools, the GPA requirements typically are between 3.5 and 3.7 minimum. That is because the big 4 receive tons of candidates from those other schools with really high GPAs.</p>
<p>It’s much harder to get a 3.9 at BYU or Texas than it is at Baruch or University of Phoenix. Now I know I’ll get a bunch of emails from the Baruch people telling me how difficult it is at their school, but I’d ask them to go to BYU or Texas and then let me know their thoughts about how hard your school is.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-2"><h2><strong>Other Factors That Could Hide a Low GPA</strong></h2>
<p>Now that we have that part over with what else matters. Some of you might have extracurricular activities that could factor in like Beta Alpha Psi. Many people have this. Although this helps, it doesn’t guarantee anything.</p>
<p>You aren’t really being recruited by the Big 4 Accounting Firms when you go through the recruiting process. You are being recruited by whatever gatekeeper you are dealing with. If you go the traditional route, that gatekeeper is a big 4 recruiter that comes and recruits at your school.  The recruiter will see that you are a member of Beta Alpha Psi and factor that in if you are tied with another candidate. However, if the other person has a higher GPA it won’t help you out.</p>
<p>If you don’t go to a big enough school, then you recruiter is the abyss that is the big 4 career website. Beta Alpha Psi and other extracurriculars definitely won’t make a difference here either.</p>
<p>Alternatively, if you can get close to a partner, that partner is your gatekeeper. Now just because you know a partner and they like you, it doesn’t mean they will get you a job. Try to get close to a partner that has passion and likes to work hard. They will get you the job because they can push pass the malaise that is the big 4 recruiting machine with all its checklists and redtape. Extracurriculars might help you with partners because it shows interest outside of school. You need to have other interests in order to relate to clients. Having extracurriculars like charity work improves your chances of impressing a partners.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-3"><h2><strong>Big 4 Red Tape Messes Everything Up</strong></h2>
<p>That’s the other thing you have to understand. This process is littered with red tape. The big 4 recruiter on campus has a checklist that they have to follow. They might imitate a human being and seem like they have a ton of authority, but in all honesty their jobs turn them into robots and they don’t authority. The big 4 don’t get married to personnel because they know they will likely leave soon. Therefore, it is easy for them to pass on any given candidate. They want the candidate to be an off the shelf candidate. That means they want you to be in a nice neat little package with all boxes checked off.</p>
<p>They don’t want the custom model big 4 candidate with all shiny features and a low GPA.</p>
<p>If you are the custom model, then you have to find the right fit into the big 4. This might mean adding more customization to your model.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-4"><h2><strong>Why Do You Want to Work at The Big Four?</strong></h2>
<p>Whenever I see the question about having a low gpa and ability to work at the big 4, I have some questions for that person. If you want to work at the big 4 so bad, then how did you get a bad GPA.</p>
<p>I’m not trying to say that I think there is something wrong with the person as far as intelligence; I just question the motivation.</p>
<p>If you were aware of the GPA requirement, then why didn’t you do everything to meet it. If you are still early on in college, just work to fix your GPA. Don’t tell me you don’t know what to do. There are many reasons why you could have a low GPA. Maybe it’s  a learning disability that you have. Maybe you are just extremely disinterested. Maybe you have a job to pay for school and work around the clock. Having that job makes you too tired to study. Maybe you have a family and don’t have time to study.</p>
<p>You need to try to understand why you have a low GPA and whether you truly want to work at the big 4. Can you make getting a higher GPA a priority. If not, then maybe the big 4 wasn’t meant for you.</p>
<p>If you can get a job somewhere else with the GPA you have, then I say you should go for it. If you bust your butt at a job, then usually great things come to you like an offer from a big 4. Even if you never get a job at the big 4, maybe you can get promoted inside of a company and have a better career than a big 4 candidate.</p>
<p>In conclusion, you need to understand how you got your bad GPA and whether you truly want to work at the big 4 before you proceed forth in you big 4 search. It’s a good moment to pause and reflect. If you could not do the work at school, let me tell you that it doesn’t get any easier in the big 4.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-5"><h2><strong>5 Tactics to Get A Big 4 Job With A Low GPA</strong></h2>
<ol>
<li>Move to a big city with a lot of openings and apply to all the big 4. Your likelihood of getting a job in a big city is good. This is because all big 4 firms will be present in big cities. There are also more clients in big cities. This means more opportunities for jobs.</li>
<li>Move to a big city and apply to all mid-tier and regional accounting firms. Once you are accepted at one of these firms, gain a couple of years of experience and then transfer to big 4.</li>
<li>Work at a client of the big 4. Going into industry is not a death sentence. Make sure you go to a company that is growing and that you will like though. Then make sure you work really hard and get good reviews. Then transfer to the big 4.</li>
<li>Accept a lower position within a big 4 firm. If none of the above examples are suitable to you. Then join the big 4 internal firms services department. This means become a recruiter yourself or become an admin at the big 4. Once you are inside of the big 4, it is much easier to transfer around. It is harder getting inside than it is transferring around. I once saw an executive assistant who was a supreme brown noser go from executive assistant to senior associate without an accounting degree or clients. It also helped that she was optically pleasing, but this just goes to show you that it is easy transfer once you are inside the big firms.</li>
<li>Look on LinkedIn and indeed to see where the most big 4 openings are and ask your big 4 recruiter about that city. Make sure you specify the line of service as well. The big 4 always need bodies somewhere because they are always winning huge projects. Sometimes the recruiters don’t know where though. If you identify that area and bring it up to your recruiter, you have a chance at nailing that job.</li>
</ol>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-6"><h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>Can you get inside of the big 4 accounting firms with a low grade point average. Yes I believe you can, but you truly have to believe in yourself. Write it down somewhere everyday. Make it all you think about and your conscious and subconscious brain will get you there. Your brain will problem solve a way in. You will either use some of the strategies I have mentioned above or you will come up with a derivative strategy on your own. Either way I wish you the best of luck.</p>

<h3>1. Play nice at national training</h3>

<h3>2. Introduce yourself to everyone in your group</h3>
<p>To increase your chances at obtaining an offer, you need to make sure you get to know everyone in your group. Don’t be afraid of people — they are just accountants. Accountants are weird, but they don’t usually bite.</p>
<p>The more people you get to know the more people that might give you work. The more work you get the more chargeable you are, and the higher utilization you have the better your review looks.</p>
<p>Getting to know more people will also increase your chances of having people say good things about you doing intern review period.</p>

<h3>3. Understand your group</h3>
<p>Every group in every big 4 accounting firm is different. Try to understand what matters to your group and who is important in your group. Try to understand what metrics matter in your group.</p>
<p>Some groups use tons of excel and love excel wizards. Some groups love people that will do dirty grunt work. Some groups only care about utilization in which case you need to make sure you have plenty of codes to bang.</p>
<p>You should also try to do good work for as many people in the group as possible. This will make sure that your review goes seamlessly. If you work for a tough person, see if you can find work with an associate or senior associate who is more pleasant. Doing work for someone tough for the whole internship might be futile if you can’t please them.</p>
<h3>4. Try to brown nose your recruiters and HR</h3>
<p>As an intern, the people that have the most say over your offer letter are HR and the recruiting team. Yes, partners do have a say but they are busy people and often don’t get too involved with intern offers.</p>
<p>The people you really want to impress are recruiters and HR. Recruiters can also help you get into a cool group if you impress and brown nose them. HR can help you get work if you are nice to them.</p>
<h3>5. Ask for work frequently but not too frequently</h3>
<p>You should ask for work frequently if you do not have any work. Big 4 accounting firms often over recruit for internships. This means that many interns are left without much to do. Another reason interns don’t get work is because people are busy and don’t want to take time to teach someone that has no experience.</p>
<p>Don’t take this personally — it’s just how the world works. Just because someone rejects you one time doesn’t mean they will not give you work the whole internship. You should check in with people in your group at least once a week to let them know you are around and looking for work. You do not want to check in too often though because people will think you are incompetent if you consistently have no work.</p>
<h3>6. Be willing to accept any work that comes to you</h3>
<p>I’ve given some terrible work to interns over the years, but I also received some terrible work as an intern. There is a good chance that you’ll be responsible for some work that involves a lot of copying or data entry. Unfortunately as a big 4 staff person you aren’t tasked with saving the world or creating the next Uber. Therefore, in order to seal the offer letter from one of the big 4 accounting firms, you will have to show willingness to work on anything. The interns that turn down work are often viewed as stubborn and privileged. People don’t want to work with them and sometimes they don’t receive offers. Increase your chances of receiving an offer by being flexible around what you are willing to work on .</p>
<h3>7. Don’t play phone games</h3>
<p>This is one of my greatest pet peeves with interns. I understand smart phones are awesome and Pokemon go is all the rage, but your cubicle or open workspace is not the place to catch up on these activities. Use your lunch break or off hours to catch up with your mom and play phone games instead of work hours. This is seen as extremely unprofessional and can be the difference between you and other interns.</p>
<h3>8. Take notes at every meeting</h3>
<p>Go old school when you attend meetings. Take notes with a pen and pad. This will impress the partners and senior managers/directors at your firm. Many of the interns I deal with think that they are the king of the castle because recruiters have spoiled them, so they don’t think they have to do anything in meetings. They think their roles in the meetings are to chill out and relax. WRONG.</p>
<p>You are lucky to be attending any meetings as an intern. Act like its a privilege and bring a notepad and a pen. Start out every meeting by writing the date and attendees. Even if there isn’t much discussed at the meeting always have your pen ready to write something so you seem diligent.</p>
<h3>Conclusion</h3>
<p>You need to do great work as an intern to make sure people feel comfortable giving you an offer. Sometimes that’s not the only thing that will get you an offer though. Follow our advice above and you will be well on your way to having a successful big 4 internship and obtaining an offer.</p>

Now the way Vault analyzes this is by surveying over 9,000 professionals in the accounting field. They ask accounting professionals in each of these firms to rank the other firms on a scale of 1 to 10 based on prestige.</span></p>

<p>As you can see from the list above that the usual suspects are there. The Big 4 dominate the listing of the top accounting firms in the world to work for.</p>
<p>The surprising part of the ranking is that KPMG was surpassed by Grant Thornton. It is especially weird because KPMG is still ranked as the number four firm in the prestige rankings. I think what this shows is that Grant Thornton has been making significant investment in the quality of life metrics that Vault measures.</p>
<p>Based on the charts and information above, it appears that accounting firms are trying to improve the quality of life in order to attract and retain top talent.</p>

<p>As the <a href="https://big4accountingfirms.com/the-blog/">Big 4 Accounting Firms blog</a>, we wanted to provide guidance on what to expect as an associate at the Big 4. The Big 4 today is an ever changing environment. All firms are trying to cater to millennials as millennials make up most of the workforce. Therefore, as an associate you will feel like the Big 4 Accounting firms are centered around you as an associate.</p>
<p>The firms will be trying to show off all their shiny new toys that they have for their new staff. For <a href="https://big4accountingfirms.com/pwc-wiki">PwC</a>, it’s Google technology. For other firms, it’s flexible working arrangements.</p>
<p>Don’t be fooled by all of this though. At the end of the day, <a href="https://big4accountingfirms.com/the-blog">the Big 4 Accounting Firms</a> still have the basic model of Rate Per Hour * Number of hours = Revenue. If you don’t take anything else away from this article take that away. This means that you will still have to work a ton of hours. The Big 4 firms try to increase the number of hours by making people work a lot of hours and hiring tons of people.</p>

<p>You will have to work all these hours while people are telling you that your working arrangement is flexible. When you think of flexible, you think of working smarter and not harder. Well be careful if you think you can work less because you would defy the basic principle of increasing the number of hours worked. This means that you have to observe your superiors and learn their working styles. Then build your schedule around theirs. Don’t come in later than them and don’t leave earlier than them.</p>

Internal politics means that you will be doing all the work while your senior and managers take credit for your work. Additionally, since the firms have made it seem like you matter so much, you will wonder why no one pays attention to you in the day to day hustle. The firms can be condescending and hypocritical. Understand that and get over it if you want to be successful. If you learn to set expectations before you start, you can succeed. What many of your peers will do is switch groups or switch jobs thinking that the grass is greener somewhere else. That is not always the case. Working is tough in general. Working at the Big 4 can be even tougher, but that does not mean that all workplaces are better than the Big 4. If you are motivated and hard working, then the Big 4 can be the place that you belong. You will just have to get used to the strengths and weaknesses of the Big 4. Some strengths and weaknesses are included below:</p>

<p>2.Good raises and promotion paths</p>
<p>3.Young and motivated workforce</p>
<p>4.Partners make a lot of money compared to their industry counterparts</p>

<p><strong>Weaknesses</strong></p>
<p>1. Large workforce so it is easy to feel like you don’t matter</p>
<p>2. Lots of admin work like billing, setting up meetings, and requesting documents</p>
<p>3. Commuting between different clients and workplaces</p>
<p>4. Lots of internal politics</p>
<p>5. Priorities of your firm and group change all the time as leadership changes frequently</p>
<p>This is a brief outline of what to expect in the Big 4 as an associate. If you manage your expectations before joining the Big 4, you can have a successful career.</p>

<p>Now back to the question of what training is necessary to be an accountant. Well the answer is a bit complicated. It depends on what type of accountant you want to be. If you want to be a CPA you typically have to attend college and obtain 150 credits in order to sit for the <a href="https://big4accountingfirms.com/cpa-test/">cpa exam</a>. If you simply want to be a staff accountant, you only need a college degree.</p>
<p>In some cases you might not even need a degree. For example, if you just want to help a bookkeeper out, you don&#8217;t need to have a college degree. You can use this experience to learn about whether you really want to be an accountant or not.</p>

I would warn against getting a degree from one of those online universities like a Devry or Univeristy of Phoenix as they are very expensive and will most likely put you into significant college debt. Community college is good enough for a simple bookkeeping position.</p>
<p>Accountants are in high demand these days as not many people want to be accountants anymore. Whatever type of accounting path you choose, you will have a high degree of employability.<br />
As far as other training to become a successful accountant, there are many things you can do to train yourself. You can train yourself by taking a variety of excel courses on Lynda or Youtube. Whatever type of accountant you choose to become will largely hinge on your use of excel. Being a master of excel will set you apart from your peers.</p>

CPE stands for continuing professional education. If you want to know what it is truly like to become an accountant, you should test out some free CPE courses online in various accounting subject.</p>
<p>CPAs need to take CPEs in order to stay current with their CPA certificate. CPE courses range in all different subjects. They can cover topics such as: taxes, auditing, managing, international accounting standards, fraud examination,etc.</p>
<p>Your company will also make you take soft skill training such as being able to manage people, dealing with clients and other skills that pertain to your company’s business. It really depends on what type of accountant you are. For example training for a public accountant versus a bookkeeper would vary greatly.</p>
